The organ at St. Joseph's is an exceptional musical instrument. While the exact installation date of Joseph Buffinton's original organ remains unknown, the church later welcomed a magnificent instrument from the Carl Barckhoff Company around 1891. The choice of St. Joseph’s was likely influenced by its superb acoustics, allowing for a captivating reverberation of over five seconds.
Despite challenges in the late 1930s and the organ becoming unplayable by the mid-1960s, our commitment to preserving this masterpiece prevailed. Led by Dr. Karl Moyer, James R. McFarland, William Van Pelt, Father L.C. Gross, and the St. Joseph Parish community, the organ was meticulously restored in November 1985. Over 700 crumbled pipes were expertly straightened by McFarland pipe maker Paul A. Maye, with only two requiring replacement. In 1987, the Organ Historical Society acknowledged the organ as "an instrument of exceptional historical merit, worthy of preservation."
Step into St. Joseph’s Church to experience the divine ambiance and the enchanting music produced by this restored masterpiece. The beautiful surroundings and soul-stirring melodies will undoubtedly make you feel, “this can be nothing other than the house of God” (Gen 28:17).
